International air cargo guidelines (IATA) stipulate that every 1 cubic metre (or any part thereof) of space occupied will have a ‘volumetric weight’ of 200kg.
IATA requires that the ‘volumetric weight’ be applied for freight charges if it is greater than the ‘actual weight’.
To calculate the volumetric weight of your shipment:
Multiply the volume (length (m) x width (m) x height (m)) by a factor of 200.
E.g. 0.45 x 0.55 x 0.45 = 0.1113 m³
0.1113 x 200 = 22.3 kg ‘volumetric weight’
If, for example, you have 4 boxes of volume 0.4 cubic metres, the volumetric weight will be 0.4 x 200 = 80.0 kilograms.
If your shipment’s ‘actual weight’ on the scales was only 23.0 kgs, you will be charged on the volumetric weight of 80.0 kilograms (69kgs).
